State grant supports Lake Michigan College cultural programming

The State of Michigan Arts and Cultural Council awarded an $18,000 Project Support Grant to Lake Michigan College for its2023-2024 Mendel Center season.

“We are grateful for the funding support provided by the Michigan Arts and Culture Council,” said LMC Mendel Center Executive Director George Kendall in a press release. “We appreciate the work and consideration of our elected government officials who recognize the value of investing in the arts as part of a strategy to strengthen communities throughout our great state.”

The grant will support the following performances:

  • Vegas McGraw: A Tim McGraw Tribute, Oct. 7, 2023
  • Step Afrika!, Nov. 12, 2023
  • Baltimore Consort presents Wassail, Wassail! Music for the Yuletide Season, Dec. 1, 2023 
  • Christmas in Killarney, Dec. 8, 2023
  • An Evening with MOIPEI, Feb. 15, 2024
  • Simply Queen, Feb. 23, 2024
  • Jarabe Mexicano, April 19, 2024

The council’s grant program helps fund the cultural arts that promote diversity and make communities more livable.

“This grant, combined with support from our season sponsors, donors, volunteers, and patrons, elevates the quality of life in our region through the arts and provides people of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to learn and connect through shared experiences,” Kendall added.

The Lake Michigan College Mendel Center’s first season was in fall of 1992. Performances are in the 1,559-seat Mendel Center Mainstage Theatre at 2755 E. Napier Ave., in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

The grants are awarded through a peer review process that includes cultural professionals throughout the country. Find a complete list of award winners here.
