Elkhart General Hospital plans $37M trauma upgrade

The emergency and trauma center at Elkhart General Hospital will undergo a $37 million renovation and expansion.

A Beacon Health System press release said the project is in the planning stages and will advance to the design, permitting and pre-construction preparation phases this year. Work is scheduled to start in 2027, and be completed in 2028.

“This project is a meaningful investment in our community, helping our teams provide faster, more private and more compassionate care when patients and families need us most,” said Elkhart General Hospital President Kira Carter-Robertson.

The expansion will include private patient rooms, four behavioral health rooms and better access for patients and ambulances, among other improvements.

As the only verified trauma center in Elkhart County, the hospital has about 50,000 patient visits a year.

“Emergency medicine depends on speed, coordination and having the right resources in place for our care team,” said Vice President of Medical Affairs Dr. Michelle Bache. “This expansion will strengthen our ability to deliver high-quality care efficiently, while also creating an environment that better supports both patients and our care teams.”

The hospital's staff also had a say in the 4,750-square-foot addition and upgrades to the 21,045-square-foot emergency department.

The Beacon Health Foundation is raising $15 million to support the project.

Beacon Health System serves patients in Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan. It employs about 11,000 staff members and 2,500 medical providers at 11 health centers.
