Mick Pawlik's 30 years as chief of the Coolspring Township Volunteer Fire Department has earned him a Circle of Corydon.
State Rep. Randy Novak (D-Michigan City) presented Pawlik with the award on Aug. 16. The award is on one of the state's highest citizen honors.
“I know firsthand the amount of hard work that our first responders put in every day to keep our communities safe,” Novak said. “However, Mick's service to his community goes far beyond being a fire chief. He is the type of guy that would give you the shirt off his back, even if he's never met you before in his life.”
Novak said he has known Pawlik for 50 years.
“I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that Mick has dedicated his life to improving the condition of others,” Novak said. “You would be hard-pressed to find someone who is more deserving of the Circle of Corydon.”
State Rep. Jim Pressel nominated Pawlik for the award. Pawlik recently stepped down as chief but still volunteers, according to the Daily Dispatch, a Western Fire Chiefs Association newsletter.
Coolspring Township Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1955 and serves Michigan City, Trail Creek, Waterford and Wolf Run in La Porte County.
