South Bend Ethanol has a new name Verbio South Bend.
Verbio North America Holdings Corp. acquired South Bend Ethanol, an ethanol plant, in 2023.
“While our name has changed, our commitment to our employees, customers, business partners, and the South Bend community remains the same,” according to a Verbio North America LinkedIn post. “Our operations, products, services and business relationships continue without change.”
Verbio had planned to invest $230 million to turn the plant into a modern biorefinery.
The company integrated ethanol production with its renewable natural gas production process. Verbio spent a decade developing the RNG process at its European facilities. The South Bend facility was expected to produce 85 million gallons of corn ethanol and 2.8 million cubic feet of RNG each year. The company buys 28 million bushels of corn annually from local farms.
The company had planned to increase full-time employees to 69 from 61 when it bought South Bend Ethanol in 2023.
Company officials said location was a key factor in making the purchase.
Verbio's first biorefinery in the U.S. is in Nevada, Iowa. Renewable natural gas production began there in December 2021. It also operates a biodiesel plant in Canada.
