The Cellar Door to open

Downtown Michigan City will gain a spot for craft cocktails, local brews, wine and food when The Celler Door opens in August.

Kyle Hutcheson and Spencer Herms are co-owners of the bar. They met freshman year at Indiana University in Bloomington. Both found their way into hospitality and moved away from Indiana. Over a decade later, they both returned to the Midwest and decided to become the tenth owners of The Cellar Door.

“Dating back to before the civil war, our bar was standing in 1861 when La Porte County was incorporated,” Hutcheson said. “It's been a bar throughout the entirety of its history. We lovingly refer to the old girl as a ship; slightly off kilter, a subtle undulating motion from within, creaks and groans echoing in the high corridors.”

The Cellar Door will feature a bar, restaurant and rec room with a 10-pin bowling game and vintage pinball machines. At 1901 Franklin St. in Michigan City, the Cellar Door is slated to open mid-August.

“Restoring this magnificent ship has been the highlight of our careers, and we are just beginning to disembark,” Hutcheson said.
