Herstoric Development’s nonprofit arm, Milkweed Gardens, was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County.
The grant supports two aspects of Milkweed Commons, a Herstoric Development project bringing together housing, local businesses and green gathering spaces in the heart of downtown South Bend. The Pocket Park is a green space for gathering, resting and connecting. The Micro-Farm is a small ecosystem where fresh food can grow year-round.
Anchored by projects like The Monarch and The Hope, Milkweed Commons aims to grow into a mixed-use hub where storefronts, apartments and event spaces connect with the green space initiatives of Milkweed Gardens. The project’s mission is to shape a live–work–play community in the Monroe Park neighborhood.
Herstoric Development is a women-owned and operated enterprise. It is dedicated to revitalizing downtown South Bend through community-focused development and the restoration of historic buildings. The enterprise is committed to preserving the history of the city.
Milkweed Gardens stewards the ecological, community-focused parts of Herstoric Development’s work. Milkweed Gardens was recently featured in PBS Michiana WNIT’s latest webisode of Outdoor Elements with Evie Kirkwood.
