Zo’s Mini Donuts wins $10k to grow business

Zo’s Mini Donuts started off small but is well on its way to bigger opportunities. The small business won Michigan’s Next Big Idea Pitch Competition and a $10,000 prize.

Zoey and Lydia Heyn started the business as a food truck in 2023. But, they had one problem. Zoey was only 15 years old and couldn't drive. So, her sister Lydia helped out. They painted the 1950s Coca-Cola trailer with red and white paint they had on hand. Pink was perfect.

By summer 2025, Zo's Mini Donuts had three locations in Michigan: Sawyer, New Buffalo and St. Joseph.

“We are incredibly grateful for this award and can’t believe what started out as an idea when Zoey was just 15 years old, has turned into this,” said Lydia Heyn, co-owner of Zo’s Mini Donuts. “To anyone who has ever bought a doughnut, you are a part of this! Our amazing team of staff and all of our customers are the reason we can continue our doughnut dream!”

Zo’s Mini Donuts was one of five finalists who gave a live pitch during the pitch competition.

“Small business entrepreneurs like Zoey and Lydia reflect the ingenuity and ambition fueling Michigan’s small business economy,” said Joshua Apodaca-Muehlenweg, vice president of Comcast Business, in a press release. Comcast sponsored the event.

“Zo’s Mini Donuts stood out for its clear vision and forward-thinking approach, and we’re proud to celebrate their success alongside the broader small business community.”

The competition took place during the two-day Michigan Celebrates Small Business event.
