Mixxture Company opens in downtown South Bend

Akesma McGlown has been on a 20-year journey to opening her own space in downtown South Bend.

Her tenacity was rewarded during a ribbon cutting ceremony Dec. 21 for the Mixxture Company at 126 S. Michigan St.

McGlown started out with a mission to provide products for natural hair, skin and body care that don’t come with all the toxic ingredients. She also found commercial products ineffective and set out to build her own brand.

“The city of South Bend is thrilled to welcome you to downtown South Bend, thank you for making an investment in our city,” said Mayor James Mueller at the event. “You are one of 30 new businesses that have opened downtown since 2022, and you’re in great company. We have followed your business over the years and can’t wait to see your continued growth.”

McGlown first was a vendor at the South Bend farmers market, and then leased a kiosk at the University Park Mall in 2021.

She credits her customers who supported her throughout her journey for making the storefront possible. They now will be able to browse and sample her line of products at the location. They include natural remedies for hair loss, dry skin, rosacea and other skin ailments.

Downtown South Bend, a nonprofit economic development organization, sponsored the ribbon cutting.
