Christopher Murphy III, who helped build 1st Source Bank over a 50-year career, received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Notre Dame.
Murphy, who is executive chairman of 1st Source Corp. and 1st Source Bank, was one of seven leaders to earn honorary degrees during the university's 181st commencement ceremony May 17.
“Deeply committed to a life of generous service, Murphy has offered his considerable talents to numerous organizations seeking to address some of society’s most critical needs — including health care, economic development, education and support for the arts — at the regional, state and national levels,” according to a university press release.
Murphy earned his bachelor’s degree in government from the University of Notre Dame, and continued his education with an MBA from Harvard University and a juris doctorate from the University of Virginia.
“Chris continues his leadership with lifelong learning and commitment to community, and this honorary degree is a fitting recognition of his impact and dedication,” said Andrea Short, CEO of 1st Source Bank, and president and CEO of parent company, 1st Source Corp, in a press release. “We are proud to celebrate this meaningful achievement alongside him.”
Murphy was part of the group of investors in 1972 who purchased the First Bank and Trust Co. of South Bend, which is now 1st Source Bank. He first was a director and then an employee in 1976.
The Indiana Chamber of Commerce named Murphy its Business Leader of the Year in 2000. In 2013, he was inducted into the South Bend Community Hall of Fame. The state twice awarded him a Sagamore of the Wabash.
