South Bend Alumni Association celebrates community leaders

The South Bend Alumni Association will celebrate inductees into the 37th South Bend Community Hall of Fame during an awards banquet Oct. 8.

“The South Bend Community Hall of Fame was established in 1987 to recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements of individuals and
organizations that have made a significant impact on the South Bend community,” according to Kris Arizmendi Choinacky, executive director, in a press release.

The awards ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Century Center in downtown South Bend.

The Hall of Fame induction for 2024 will include the following community and business leaders:

  • Hon. Andre Gammage, an Adams High School alumnus, defense attorney for 20 years and magistrate with the St. Joseph Circuit Court
  • Gary Gilot, a longtime South Bend leader who helped bring initiatives like the Bowman Creek Educational Ecosystem and smart sewer technology to the city
  • Charlie Hayes, founder of Charles S. Hayes Inc., a company providing facilities to the telecommunications industry
  • Greg Humnicky, a teacher, coach and athletic director at Clay High School
  • Vickie McIntire, a longtime champion of causes that include criminal justice, abused women and juvenile offenders, and board member of the Firefly Festival for the Performing Arts
  • Freddie Thon, an advocate for Latino culture and member of more than 30 community organizations, along with a career at Thon Steel
  • Judith Overmeyer, a teacher at John Adams High School for 20 years
  • Seabe Gavin Sr. (in memoriam), a Navy veteran and athlete who excelled at baseball, football and boxing

2024 Recognition Awards:

  • Ideal Baldoni Distinguished Public Service Award: Shalon “Shay” Davis
  • Contribution to Education Corporate Award: AEP Foundation/ Indiana Michigan Power
  • Distinguished Community Service Award: 466 Works
  • Distinguished Achievement Award: Cynthia Murphy

Candidates must have lived or worked in South Bend for at least 10 years and made a significant contribution to the community.

The South Bend Alumni Association supports students in the South Bend Community School Corp. with financial assistance for extracurricular activities.
