Officials broke ground Sept. 1 on the first phase of the $40 million Bremen GROWTH Project.
State and local officials were on hand to celebrate the transformational project.
“This groundbreaking represents more than the beginning of a multi-phased construction project,” said Mike Leman, Bremen Town Council president, in a press release. “It represents a commitment to Bremen's future — to creating places where people can live, connect, work and build their lives.”
The Greenway, Recreation, Opportunities for Wage Growth & Transformational Housing project received $3.7 million in READI 2.0 funding. The first phase included a 3-mile trail that will connect parks, schools and new housing.
“READI projects like these are a great example of how we grow our workforce, strengthen our communities, and build an economy that lasts,” said Gov. Mike Braun in a press release.
Braun said the project will include the town's first significant housing development in more than 20 years. About 184 homes will be built by 2028. The project also will exapand the town to the south.
The U.S. Census Bureau reported 4,642 residents in 2021 in its American Community Survey from 2024-2025. The town has about 1,850 housing units, which are 94% occupied, which doesn't leave much room for population growth. The median age is 36.2 years old.
“The Bremen GROWTH Project is a great example of how strategic investments in housing and quality of place can support business growth, attract and retain talent, and create opportunities for Hoosiers,” said Indiana Secretary of Commerce Chuck Goodrich. “Through READI, we’re giving communities the tools to invest in their own growth and help Indiana compete for the people and businesses that will drive our future.”
