South Bend airport begins work on front drive

South Bend International Airport celebrated the start of a $20 million project that will make it easier to access the front drive.

Officials gathered May 13 for a groundbreaking ceremony.

A dedicated lane separated by a median will accommodate taxis, ride sharing and shuttles to reduce congestion at the main entrance. The project includes canopies over two lanes to protect travelers from the weather.

“As we continue to grow, we continue to assess the passenger experience,” said Mike Daigle, SBN CEO and executive director, in a press release. “We are excited for the safety improvements and modernization this project will bring to everyone flying in and out of SBN.”

The project will take about 1.5 years to complete. During construction, short-term parking will close. But the front drive will remain accessible for drop-offs. The airport recommends arriving two hours in advance of departing to leave enough time to park, go through security and find gates.

SBN is using the Build-Operate-Transfer model to fund the project through a public-private partnership. Partners include GM Development, The Hagerman Group, BF&S Civil Engineers, JQOL, Abonmarche, C&E Excavating and the state of Indiana.

SBN offers nonstop flights to 15 locations through five air carriers. Check on project updates here before departing.
