Michiana Bike to Work Week begins with May First Fridays: Pedals & Petals in downtown South Bend. The event's theme is cycling and spring.
Riders can decorate their bicycles and helmets for a parade at 7 p.m. May 1. The top three bikes in adult and youth categories will receive a prize.
“We love May First Fridays, because it really does feel like the city comes out of hibernation,” said Jessica Bamber, director of events and strategic partnerships. “Pedals & Petals is a great way to kick off the block party season — get outside, decorate your bike, grab some food, and just enjoy being downtown.”
The South Bend Bike Garage will offer free minor bike repairs and a valet service. The nonprofit at 119 W. Wayne St. accepts donations, offers free classes and sells bikes. It's motto is: “Whether you’re here to fix a bike, find a bike, or be part of something bigger, there’s a place for you at the Bike Garage.”
National Bike Month has been celebrated in May since 1956 to show the benefits of cycling. Bike to Work Week 2026 will take place May 11 through 17, and Bike to Work Day is May 15. Less than 1% of the U.S. population bikes to work, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The May 1 event also kicks off the block party season, which includes vendors and food trucks on Michigan Street.
Music will be performed by the bands Blue Eyed Soul and The Music Village Community Jammers. Other entertainment will be provided by the IU South Bend Tap and Kickline and Spotlight Performers Team.
The May First Fridays evening event will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Michigan Street. Admission is free. First Fridays is a monthly event year round.
Michiana Bike to Work Week will kick off events on May 11 with a bike ride at Pinhook Park. Other events include a kids bike night, a night ride, pancake breakfast, and a day filled with bike activities on May 16.
