The South Bend-based YMCA of Greater Michiana received a $25,000 grant from the United Way of St. Joseph County.
The YMCA will use the funds to support the launch of its first childcare center in South Bend. The new center, located on the second floor of the Downtown South Bend YMCA, is slated to open in 2026. It will serve children from infancy to age three.
The grant will help cover startup costs, including recruiting staff, purchasing supplies and developing an inclusive curriculum. The funds will support efforts to make childcare more accessible for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families by offering sliding-scale fees and scholarship opportunities.
“At the YMCA, we are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for children while supporting working families,” said Mark Weber, YMCA of Greater Michiana CEO, in a press release. “We are also committed to ensuring that all activities and services funded under this grant are provided without regard to race, age, color, religion, sex, disability, national origin, ancestry or veteran status.”
Weber said that the grant from United Way will help the YMCA expand its reach and deliver essential childcare services to all who need it.
The YMCA’s childcare initiatives are designed to offer early childhood education and care while allowing parents and caregivers to pursue employment, education and personal growth opportunities.
“This funding allows us to enhance our programs and offer greater access to high-quality, affordable childcare services – ensuring that families in our community have the support they need to thrive,” Weber said.
