Hitachi earns sustainability award from Michigan City

Hitachi Global Air Power's efforts to restore native prairie and decarbonization efforts are being noticed. The Michigan City sustainability commission awarded the compressed air solutions company with a Caught YOU Being Green Award at its April 7 meeting.

Hitachi Global Air Power is converting almost 7 acres of turf grass into native prairie over five years at its Michigan City headquarters. The company also launched a plan to restore the woods at the International Friendship Botanic Gardens in Pottawattamie Park.

“In Michigan City and around the world, Hitachi is committed to advancing sustainability, human wellbeing, and economic performance through innovation and digital capabilities,” said Hideki Fujimoto, president and CEO of Hitachi Global Air Power, in a press release. “We are proud to receive this honor from the sustainability commission.”

Both projects also are supported by the La Porte County Soil and Water Conservation District and a Clean Water Indiana grant.

Hitachi Global Air Power also met carbon neutrality goals in March 2025, and continues to prioritize these efforts.

“These initiatives reflect the strength of our team and community partners,” said Katrina Saucier, director of sustainability at Hitachi Global Air Power. “By integrating sustainability into our business practices, we can invest in our community while serving customers more efficiently and reducing waste.”

Parent company Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems Co. has locations around the world and employs about 280,000 people.
