Mammoth Solar, Starke County secure grant

Mammoth Solar, in collaboration with the Starke County Highway Department and the Indiana Economic Development Corp., received a $1.2 million grant to upgrade county roadways.

The funding was originally allocated in 2022 as part of the IEDC’s incentive package for Mammoth Solar’s development in Northwest Indiana. It will be used to repair and enhance roads impacted in part by the large-scale renewable energy project. The grant was formally awarded to the Starke County Highway Department.

The infrastructure investment builds on road repair payments Mammoth Solar made during construction.

“Our goal has always been to be more than a developer,” said Kevin Parzyck, Doral Renewables senior vice president of development, in a press release. “We want to be a true partner. By improving local infrastructure, we’re helping create a safer and more efficient transportation system for residents and farmers and once again prove that promises that were made years ago are kept.”

The grant will be accessed incrementally, as eligible road improvement projects are undertaken. The Starke County Highway Department will oversee the work in coordination with ongoing solar development, ensuring that immediate and long-term transportation needs are met.

“This grant is a huge win for our county,” Rachel Kinney, Starke County highway superintendent, said. “These funds will allow us to not only address wear and tear from heavy equipment and construction traffic but also make meaningful improvements that will serve residents for years to come.”
