A former professional basketball player has her sights set on making a difference in South Bend. Devereaux Peters has plans for high-quality housing options in downtown South Bend.
As the founder of Chateaux 14 Development, she took one more step toward that goal with the groundbreaking of The Monreaux, a 57-unit mixed-use, mixed-income housing development at 100 W. Monroe St. The March 13 ceremony included South Bend Mayor James Mueller, among other community and business leaders.
“The Monreaux represents our commitment to building housing that people are proud to call home,” Peters said in a press release. “Our goal is to create an affordable community that rivals market-rate developments while also supporting residents with services and opportunities that help them thrive.”
Those added-value amenities include financial literacy, resume building and nutrition classes; help applying for Social Security, SNAP and rental assistance; rent reporting that helps build credit; and access to other community clubs and services.
“Developments like The Monreaux demonstrate what is possible when mission-driven partners come together to expand access to quality housing,” said Keith Broadnax, SVP of business development for Cinnaire, a nonprofit financial partner.
Other planned features include a leasing office, fitness center, bicycle parking area, community meeting room, business center, and an outdoor community patio with gathering spaces, grills and a pergola.
Peters played in the Women's National Basketball Association and starred at the University of Notre Dame.
