South Bend-based Beacon Health System will appoint key leadership and integration roles after it acquires Ascension Southwest Michigan this summer.
Carl Risk, Elkhart General Hospital president since 2016, will become president of Borgess Hospital. He will also serve as integration executive for the Ascension Southwest Michigan facilities. The facilities include Borgess Hospital, Borgess Allegan Hospital, Borgess-Lee Hospital, Borgess-Pipp Hospital, 35 outpatient clinics and an ambulatory surgery center.
“During his tenure at Elkhart General Hospital, Carl has built a strong leadership team and fostered an exceptional team atmosphere and workplace culture that have resulted in a consistent achievement of health system strategic goals,” said Kreg Gruber, Beacon Health System CEO, in a press release. “Carl will initially focus on organizational stability before expanding programs and services in the years ahead.”
Beacon Health System has initiated a search for the next president of Elkhart General Hospital. Michael Johnson, Elkhart General Hospital vice president of operations, will serve as interim president until a permanent selection is made.
Kari Snyder will become vice president of nursing of Borgess Hospital. Snyder has served as executive director of nursing at Elkhart General Hospital since 2024. She previously served as executive director of the Beacon Franciscan Hospital Joint Venture in La Porte. Snyder will focus on stabilizing and strengthening nursing operations at Borgess Hospital upon completion of the acquisition.
Beacon Health System announced last month that it signed an agreement to acquire Ascension Southwest Michigan. The acquisition expands Beacon Health System’s footprint across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.
Beacon Health System operates Beacon Children’s Hospital, Beacon Granger Hospital, Community Hospital of Bremen, Elkhart General Hospital, Memorial Epworth Center, Memorial Hospital of South Bend and Three Rivers Health. The heath care network has over 1,000 physicians. Beacon Health System was founded in 2011.
