Alyssa Atkinson of South Bend and Sophia Grubbs of Elkhart took home the titles of Hoosier Star adult and youth winners.
The 19th Hoosier Star Vocal Competition and Concert took place Sept. 14 at the La Porte Civic Auditorium. The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra hosts the annual competition.
Alyssa Atkinson of South Bend sang “A New Life” from the musical Jekyll and Hyde to take home first prize in the adult division. Max Principe of La Porte was runner-up, singing the SteelDrivers song “If It Hadn't Been for Love.”
Sophia Grubbs of Elkhart took home first prize in the youth division with her performance of “My Strongest Suit” from the musical Aida. Bayleigh Miller of La Porte was runner-up, singing “Shy” from the musical Once Upon a Mattress.
The Hoosier Star event also serves as a fundraiser for the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra. This year’s event raised nearly $50,000 for the symphony.
The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra serves the 110,000 residents of La Porte County and regions beyond, including Southwest Michigan. The symphony is in its 52nd year. Each year, the orchestra presents four subscription concerts, in addition to the Hoosier Star and Holiday at the Pops concerts.
