Notre Dame to host BLDG Trades Day

Students and community members can learn about trades at BLDG Trades Day @ Notre Dame March 7.

The event will provide 1,100 area high school students and educators with the opportunity to meet local employers and explore trades education and career opportunities. They can see how their classroom learning is building a foundation for their future success.

More than 60 contractors and training partners will be on hand to interact with students. Students can participate in hands-on activities and tour a current building project under construction.

The event will be open to the public in the afternoon. Additional students of all ages, educators, parents, job seekers and community members can learn about construction-related careers available in the Region.

The University of Notre Dame, MACIAF (Michiana Area Construction Industry Advancement Fund) and St. Joseph Valley Building Trades are presenting the event. It is organized in partnership with the South Bend Regional Chamber.

“The goal of Building Trades Day is to elevate the public perception of building trades careers and the valuable role tradespeople and the construction industry play in the economic growth of our region, state and country,” said Jeff Rea, South Bend Regional Chamber president and CEO, in a press release.

Shawn O’Brien, MACIAF executive director, said there is a powerful impact when students see the education and career opportunities available.

“These experiences help students bridge what they’re learning in the classroom to their next step in education or employment and connect the next generation of talent to a wide array of opportunities for training and employment,” Tony Polotto, University of Notre Dame senior director of construction and quality assurance, said.

BLDG Trades Day @ Notre Dame is open to the community 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 7. The event will take place at University of Notre Dame’s Stepan Center.
