Elkhart county block grants underway

The Vibrant Communities Block Grant program is open and accepting project submissions.

The program aims to support residents in creating positive change in Elkhart county.

Elkhart resident Lauren Sedillo is the most recent recipient of Block Grant funding. She plans to create a Tool Library. The library will serve neighborhoods in the 100 and 200 blocks of Division St. and State St. in Elkhart. The Tool Library provides an area for the storage of lawn, yard and home tools. Residents can share the tools for lawn maintenance, neighborhood beautification and household projects.

Block Grants are available for projects of all sizes and scopes. Submissions are welcome for small, simple projects such as block parties, garden installations and neighborhood clean-ups. Residents are also encouraged to apply for funding for more substantial proposals like new public seating areas. Proposals for larger projects, such as playground upgrades and increased neighborhood safety measures, are also considered for funding. Grants are available for funding up to $2,500.

“We have so many capable, thoughtful residents who are able and willing to offer great ideas—and take action—for projects that beautify and energize our neighborhoods,” said Bil Murray, program project manager, in a press release. ‘Without some extra help and funding support, however, it can be daunting for residents to raise their hands, share their vision and invest their time and effort into getting community projects off the ground.”

Murray said the program encourages unity and engagement by providing funding for neighborhood projects. Elkhart County residents ages 18+ who are interested in Vibrant Communities Block Grants are encouraged apply.

The grant program has previously funded a community brunch, a music gathering and an ice cream social event. The program also distributed awards to help restore a fountain at Elkhart’s Melrose Manor community.

“We’re happy to support great projects like this, and we encourage all residents of Elkhart County to put their ideas down and apply for a Block Grant,” Jon Hunsberger, Elkhart County Convention & Visitors Bureau executive director, said. “We are invested in our communities and our people, and programs like this—along with initiatives like the Little BIG Idea Grant—demonstrate how important it is to empower the voices and ideas of our residents, and ensure they play a leading role in shaping Elkhart County’s future.”
