Sylvan Learning opens in Portage

Sylvan Learning has expanded its footprint in Indiana by opening a new location June 2 in Portage.

The new center will make academic support more accessible to families in the Portage area. Many students previously had to travel to other Sylvan Learning locations. Sylvan Learning’s goal is to be more embedded in the community, making it easier for families to engage with services consistently over time.

Sarah Miller serves as director of the new center, along with her business partner, Kent Kolbow. Knowing she wanted to serve kids in need, Miller left a career in nonprofit work to open a Sylvan Learning center with Kolbow in 2010 in Mishawaka. Fifteen years later, Miller and Kolbow own 21 Sylvan Learning centers across Indiana, Florida and Maryland.

Under their leadership, the Mishawaka center grew from a handful of students to hundreds served each year. Miller is working to build lasting relationships with local schools and the broader community.

The new facility is at 1605 Adler St. in Portage.

Sylvan Learning provides personalized tutoring and educational services to struggling students. The company operates over 750 locations worldwide. Founded in 1979, the Sylvan Learning is based in Baltimore, Maryland.
