New South Bend hub earns $30M Lilly Endowment grant

The University of Notre Dame's plans for a Downtown South Bend Tech and Talent Hub received a $30 million infusion from a Lilly Endowment matching grant.

The funds are distributed through the College and Community Collaboration initiative. The competitive Lilly Endowment program was established in 2023.

“The DTSB Tech and Talent Hub will not only enhance Notre Dame’s research capabilities, but also drive significant economic growth and community development in downtown South Bend,” said university President Rev. Robert A. Dowd in a press release. “This project exemplifies our commitment to integrating research and innovation with impactful community engagement, fostering both local and regional advancement.”

The hub will repurpose the former South Bend Tribune building in downtown. The university acquired the building from Schurz Communications in October. The three-story building has been vacant since 2019.

“We hope that this purposeful reinvention of a historic venue in downtown South Bend will further enhance the Region’s bright future,” said Shannon Cullinan, Notre Dame’s executive vice president.

Notre Dame is one of 13 institutions of higher learning in the state to receive funds through the program.

The Lilly Endowment is a private philanthropic foundation based in Indianapolis. It was founded in 1937.
