Amazon recently announced the opening of its new 171,000 square-foot delivery station in Elkhart.
The delivery station at 2695 Aeroplex Dr. supports over 250 employees.
Amazon aims to speed up deliveries for customers throughout the Michiana region. Packages are shipped to the delivery station from neighboring Amazon fulfillment and sortation centers, loaded into delivery vehicles and delivered to customers. Eight local delivery service partners will operate from the new location, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs to build their own delivery businesses.
As part of Amazon's commitment to net-zero carbon by 2040, the Elkhart delivery station will deploy 125 custom-built Rivian electric delivery vehicles. Amazon has deployed over 30,000 electric vehicles nationwide, delivering over 1 billion packages in 2023. With plans for 100,000 electric delivery vehicles on the road by 2030, Amazon is aiming to eliminate millions of metric tons of carbon annually.
The new Elkhart facility adds to Amazon's growing presence in Indiana, which includes over 26,000 full- and part-time employees across 37 facilities statewide. Since 2010, the company has invested $25.5 billion in the Hoosier State through infrastructure development and employee compensation.
“We're proud to deepen our roots in Elkhart County with this new delivery station,” said Laura Harris, Amazon Elkhart Delivery Station senior site lead, in a press release. “Through collaboration with local leaders and community partners, we're committed to creating positive impact through job creation, entrepreneurial opportunities and reliable delivery service for our customers.”
Rod Roberson, Elkhart mayor, said Elkhart has attracted a skilled workforce from across Michiana for many years. “This new investment reflects the logistical advantages our community provides while further diversifying our labor force at a time when our employment base has experienced challenges,” Roberson said. “Amazon’s decision to invest in Northern Indiana is both timely and significant, and the City of Elkhart is proud to welcome them.”
