Additional assistance is coming to Porter County food pantries and homeless shelter services facing increased use because of the pandemic.

The Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program awarded $81,326 to Porter County.

The selection was made by a national board, chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, The Salvation Army, United Jewish Communities and United Way of America, according to the United Way of Porter County.

A local county board will determine how the funds will be distributed and is encouraging all nonprofits serving Porter County to apply. Under the terms of the grant, local agencies must: be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government; be eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.

Applications are due Jan. 29. Additional information is available by contacting the United Way of Porter County at info@unitedwaypc.org.
