AAA Federal Credit Union, which had branches in Mishawaka and South Bend, merged with Credit Union1.
AAA agreed to the merger because of CU1's technological offerings for customers. All members of AAA became members of CU1.
“We believe a synergy exists between the two credit unions and this partnership will benefit all involved,” according to the notice of a special meeting.
The merger would also give AAA members more access to branches across the county, and employees better opportunities for growth.
“We are excited to expand our presence in the South Bend region and provide members with access to enhanced products, cutting-edge technology, and the exceptional level of member experience that defines Credit Union 1,” according to a company post on LinkedIn. “We look forward to growing together and continuing our shared commitment to serving our communities and helping members achieve their financial goals.”
Customers were given detailed information about new routing and account numbers, along with other information about the new ownership.
The merger was proposed at a meeting of the AAA FCU board of directors meeting in June 2025. The merger was effective Aug. 1, 2025. Members had till Nov. 10 to switch to CU1 debit cards.
Credit Union 1 was founded in 1958 to serve personnel on Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois. Now the credit union serves members in Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Georgia, Florida, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
