Team members of Flaherty & Collins Properties, Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch and community leaders gathered to break ground on The Franklin at 11th Street Station.
The groundbreaking event marks the next steps for a mixed-use development by the train station as the South Shore Line's double-track project nears completion.
“This represents a major step in improving access to public transit and bolstering our local economy,” said Nelson Deuitch in a press release. “It allows the city an opportunity to grow, not only on the north end but also in Midtown and throughout the city.”
The development will encompass 1.5 acres of land at the corner of 11th and Franklin streets in Michigan City. It will feature 220 apartments, commercial space, parking and access to transit.
“I am looking forward to the impact of this transit-oriented-development housing project and the many more that will improve the quality of place and quality of life for Hoosiers in Northwest Indiana,” said Vincent Ash, Indiana Economic Development Corp. chief of staff.
The initial plan was for a parking garage. Nelson Deuitch called the project’s expansion a labor of love.
“We are embarking on something special, and because of this groundbreaking, other investments are happening here in the city,” Nelson Deuitch said. “Michigan City is going through a renaissance period, and it is going to be like no other.”
The 12-story building will feature apartments, a swim spa, café, fitness center and rooftop lounge with Lake Michigan views. The building will have a parking garage for residents, visitors and commuters.
“We strive to offer connectivity for our residents and those throughout the Region, and The Franklin will help us do just that,” Nelson Deuitch said. “We want to become the hub of the Region when it comes to providing a place for our residents and visitors to live, work and play.”
The development is expected to be completed by fall 2025. The double-track project is on schedule to finish in May.
