Zoo Luminate lights up the zoo

The Potawatomi Zoo is opening March 19 for a new Chinese lantern event: Zoo Luminate.

“We’re so proud to bring this brand-new event to our region,” said Josh Sisk, Potawatomi Zoo executive director, in a press release. “It’s like nothing we’ve ever seen here at the zoo, and we think it’s something people are never going to forget.”

Zoo Luminate is brought to life at the zoo in partnership with Tianyu Arts & Culture.

Tianyu Arts & Culture is a U.S.-based Chinese lantern festival producer. It has partnered with zoos, botanical gardens and natural science institutions to create lantern festivals. Inspired by nature, the lantern designs highlight birds, land mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish in their natural habitats, as well as endangered and extinct wildlife.

“It’s hard to describe how spectacular these lanterns really are,” Sisk said. “Even we were astonished when Tianyu began setting up giant pandas, tigers, giraffes and so much more. There are almost 60 different displays around the zoo. You really have to see it to believe it.”

Zoo Luminate will be open 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday through May 25.
