Elkhart-based Heart City Health recently broke ground on a project to transform the former Sears building in Elkhart into a medical facility.
The Elkhart Medical Center will span over 50,000 square feet within a shared 100,000 square-foot complex. The center will house an urgent care and a pharmacy. It will also feature suites for adult and pediatric primary care, behavior health care and dental care. The center will have a demonstration kitchen for nutritional education and student living suites.
“It’s exciting to witness this transformation,” Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson said in a press release. “As someone who once shopped at the former Sears, I’m proud to see this building reborn with a purpose that will serve the community’s future.”
Esleen Fultz, Heart City Health CEO, said the groundbreaking marked a milestone in Heart City Health’s 30-year history. She highlighted Heart City Health’s commitment to welcoming every individual regardless of their circumstances.
“This redeveloped facility will not only double our capacity to serve our community, but it also stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to ensure that every person—whether insured or not—receives the high-quality care they deserve,” Fultz said. “We are strengthening the health of Elkhart’s workforce and embodying our vision that no one should be left behind when it comes to their health and well-being.”
Mishawaka-based Arkos Design and Goshen-based Ancon Construction are designing and constructing the new facility. The medical center is slated to open in late 2025.
“The Heart City Health Elkhart Medical Center represents a remarkable collaboration between stakeholders, repurposing an iconic building to serve the medical needs of the community for years to come,” Chip Coleman, Arkos Design senior project architect, said.
