The Northwest Indiana Brownfield Seminar on Oct. 3 will highlight resources for properties potentially affected by pollutants.
The Economic Development Corp. Michigan City, City of Michigan City and BCA Environmental Consultants are presenting the seminar.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines a brownfield as “a property where expansion, redevelopment or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant.”
The seminar will be geared toward realtors, investors and business owners. Speakers will focus on tools and incentives as well as federal, state and local resources regarding brownfields. Case studies from across the state will be featured during panel discussions.
“Brownfield properties are unique and can be challenging for potential redevelopment,” Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch said in a press release. “This collaborative seminar will spur discussions while outlining steps industry leaders can take here in Northwest Indiana.”
The seminar will include three sessions addressing brownfield tools and incentives, local case studies from across Indiana and federal, state and local resources. Speakers have first-hand experience with brownfields and redevelopment. Speakers include City of Logansport deputy mayor Jacob Pomasl, KSU-TAB EPA 5 region coordinator Beth Grigsby, Delta Institute AICP senior specialist Natalie Brown and EPA Region 5 director of land, chemicals & redevelopment division Ed Nam.
