The railroad crossing on State Route19 and Nappanee Street is the latest crossing to be resurfaced in Elkhart.
The work on the crossing began July 22 and finished July 27. It was completed in partnership with the Indiana Department of Transportation and Patriot Rail.
“We have received so much positive feedback from residents following the resurfacing of these railroad crossings,” Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson said in a press release. “It has made driving around this city much safer and easier.”
The Blazer and Richmond railroad crossing is slated to be resurfaced next. As of June, the city had resurfaced six railroad crossings to eliminate rough crossings.
The City of Elkhart invited community members to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completed resurfacing project. The event took place July 29 at the SR 19 and Nappanee Street railroad crossing north of Beardsley Avenue.
Elkhart County has four railroads. The Elkhart Rail Switching Yard is the second largest Norfolk Southern Rail Yard in the nation. The first railroad arrived in Elkhart in 1851.
