Culture Café celebrates opening in downtown South Bend

Downtown South Bend Inc. hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony July 29 for Culture Café, the area’s new addition.

The Culture Café is adjacent to Merrimans’ Jazz Playhouse. Owners Stephen and Mary Merriman operate both Merrimans’ Playhouse and the new Culture Café.

The café provides a space in the daytime as a traditional coffee shop. It also will open after hours to accommodate playhouse patrons with light food and beverages. The playhouse and café spaces are connected.

The Culture Café will offer house coffee and espresso beverages, muffins, pastries and gelato.

“We strive to provide a ‘Bohemia After Dark' experience,” Stephen Merriman said in a press release. “The mission of the café is to celebrate our common humanness through our different cultures, cultivating awareness through the arts, music, the humanities, literature, philosophy and discussion, while sharing the joys of these moments with coffee, gelato, affogato and other specialty food items.”

Downtown South Bend is a nonprofit governed by a board, including downtown business owners, downtown residents, local business leaders, the University of Notre Dame and city officials. The organization promotes the city’s downtown amenities.
